MPT stands for Multi-Purpose Tyres. They are fitted to vehicles that are neither purely on-road nor purely off-road: telescopic handlers, backhoe loaders, municipal and winter-service vehicles, and compact wheel loaders used in mixed-use applications. It is precisely this balancing act that makes the choice tricky.
What to look for when making your choice
Ratio of road to off-road terrain
Maximum authorised speed
Load capacity with the boom fully extended
Self-cleaning of the profile
Smooth running and wear on tarmac
Resistance to road salt
A compromise needs to be worked out
A tread pattern that performs well off-road is loud and fast on the road. A tread pattern that lasts a long time on tarmac digs in on soft ground. The question is therefore never „which is the best?“, but rather: what percentage of your operating hours are actually spent on the road?
- Mainly for road use: flatter tread pattern, higher speed rating, smooth ride.
- Predominantly off-road: a more open tread pattern that cleans itself when the tyre rotates.
- Telescopic handlers require a high load capacity and a stable base, as the load shifts forwards when the boom is extended.
- In winter maintenance, it is also important to consider how the mixture reacts to cold temperatures and road salt.
