Compulsory winter tyres in Germany

In Germany, the use of winter tyres is mandatory depending on the conditions: in wintry road conditions such as snow, ice or slippery surfaces, tyres marked as suitable for such conditions are compulsory.

What you should know

Tyres bearing the Alpine symbol – the snowflake – which is recognised throughout Europe, are compulsory

Since 2018, M+S markings alone, without the Alpine symbol, no longer meet the requirements for newly manufactured tyres

Breaches of the compulsory winter tyre regulations may result in a fine

Our recommendation

As wintry conditions often arise at short notice, we recommend switching to winter tyres as soon as the first sustained spell of cold weather arrives in autumn. Our branches will be happy to advise you on the best time to do this and on the most suitable tyres.
