AS stands for agricultural tractor. These tyres must be able to do two things at once that are contradictory: generate traction in the field without compacting the soil, and run smoothly on the road whilst minimising wear. Which tyre can do this for your machine depends on the load, speed and tyre pressure.
What to look for when making your choice
Wheel load and speed travelled
Ground pressure and compaction
Proportion of road area compared with field area
Radial or diagonal
IF and VF technology for higher loads
Approval by the machine manufacturer
Air pressure determines the ground conditions
No other control lever is quite as effective and costs so little. Too much pressure narrows the contact patch and compacts the ground; too little pressure on the road wears out the tyres. We’ll calculate the correct pressures for your actual axle loads — separately for field and road use.
- At the same pressure, IF tyres can carry around 20 per cent more load, whilst VF tyres can carry around 40 per cent more — or the same load at significantly lower pressure.
- Large, low-pressure tyres distribute the weight over a larger area and protect the topsoil.
- When there’s a high proportion of road riding, the tyre compound is key: if it’s too soft, the tread blocks will be worn smooth after just one season.
- Changing tyres requires approval from the machine manufacturer — we’ll sort that out before placing the order.
Forestry and trailers too
In forestry, puncture resistance and sidewall stability are more important than ride comfort. For trailers and slurry tankers, the priorities are different again: there, the focus is on load-bearing capacity at high road speeds. We stock both types and can advise you on where a compromise tyre is worthwhile and where it isn’t.
When the harvest is in full swing, speed is key
No machinery should be left idle during the harvest. Our field service team and the manufacturers’ specialists are available at that time; our service vans will come to wherever your machinery is in operation, and we will collect and deliver wheels on request.
