A commercial vehicle tyre consists mainly of its carcass — and this is usually still in good condition even when the tread has long since worn away. Once it is fitted with a new tread, the tyre begins its second life. Reifen Müller operates its own retreading plant in Hammelburg-Westheim for this purpose; up to 350 retreaded tyres leave the facility every day.

This is how a second life begins
Only when the carcass and tread match perfectly can a used tyre be transformed back into a high-quality tyre. This is ensured by modern carcass testing technology and high-quality tread material.
- Every tyre carcass is inspected before it goes into production. Anything that fails the inspection is rejected — this step is what determines the quality.
- The old tread is removed and the carcass is prepared for the new strip.
- The tread is selected according to the type of application and the axle position. A trailer axle requires a different tread to a drive axle.
- Under heat and pressure, the two parts bond permanently, after which the final inspection takes place.
Arguments in favour of this
Retreaded commercial vehicle tyres are considered sustainable under the EU Taxonomy Regulation. They are permitted for use by haulage companies and save a significant amount of material compared with new tyres — provided the tyre is designed for its intended use and is not being used as a stopgap solution.
That is why it is worth keeping an eye on the tyre from the outset: ensuring the correct tyre pressure, knowing the right time to change it, and carrying out repairs before damage turns into a total loss.
